Italianate buildings were popular in the United States from 1840 to the end of the century. These picturesque home plans are designed to resemble Italian villas of rural Italy, with their cupolas and terra cotta tile roofs.

Italianate mansion featured an asymmetrical floor plan. The general floor plans of Italianate mansions will be open flowing, spacious, and have plenty of rooms to roam. These homes are often two stories with bedrooms on the second floor. The main exterior elements are a low-pitched or flat roof with a square cupola rising from the center of the roofline. Both the roof and cupola will have widely overhanging eaves supported by heavy decorative brackets. Windows tend to be tall and narrow and are almost always arched. Construction materials may range from wood to stone and stucco.

Italianate mansions are as romantic as the Gothic Revival, but infinitely better adapted to the freer and more family-oriented lifestyle of the middle class.

- find the most maximized storage such as pantry storage with units that go floor to ceiling

- Use space-saving furnishings (e.g. a banquette with drawers underneath, a small round table and chairs in an enclosed corner, etc.)

- pick a small but deeper bowl sink

- buy the small-scaled kitchen equipments only (e.g. oven, refrigerator, dishwasher, blenders, rice cookers, toasters, etc.)
